Allen Custom Drills: Built tough for New Zealand seeding conditions
Based in Mid Canterbury, one of New Zealand’s most productive agricultural regions Allen Custom Drills is an owner-operated business focused on designing and manufacturing air seeder drills built for reliability, accuracy and longevity in real paddock conditions.
The Allen Custom Drills name is well established across New Zealand and has earned a strong reputation among contractors and farmers who need machinery that can cope with challenging soils, tight weather windows and the demands of modern cropping and pasture renewal systems.
The company’s philosophy is straightforward. Design & build drills that can handle demanding ground conditions, place seed accurately and continue working efficiently season after season. That focus on practical performance has shaped a range designed to suit a wide spread of farming systems and operator preferences.
Allen Custom Drills offers five base models, with the flexibility to add optional extras to suit many different farming & soil types and operator preferences.
The Ergonomic Drill, or E-D Series, is a practical entry-level triple disc drill available in working widths from 3 to 4 metres. For contractors and larger-scale operations, the Contour Drill, or C-D Series is a proven triple disc option and remains one of the most popular machines in the range, offered from 3 to 6 metres.
For operators who prefer a tyne-based system, the Tyne Drill, or T-D Series, provides a robust solution. It is fitted with 25 mm coil tynes and tungsten-tipped T-boots and is available in widths from 4.5 to 6 metres.
For min-till operators wanting stronger ground consolidation, the Packer Drill, or P-D Series, incorporates a tyre packer system and is offered in 5 and 6 metre working widths.
Completing the range is the Heavy-Duty Direct Drill, or H-D Series, a more specialised machine best suited to flat ground conditions. It’s not as common as the other models, but remains a great option for hard ground conditions, and is available in 5 and 6 metre widths.
Across the range, all Allen drills offer row spacing options of either 5” (125 mm) or 6” (150 mm).
Transport practicality is another key consideration. All models maintain a 3-metre transport width, making them easier to move between paddocks and/or farms where needed.
All machines have the option of being iSO ready or a 7-inch touchscreen monitor and now have a WCM (Wireless Connection Module) standard which allows the operator to connect any WiFi equipped phone or tablet direct to the drill for calibration. This means they don’t need to go backwards and forwards to the tractor cab to load in dispensed amounts and start another calibration.
Allen Custom Drills recognises that investing in machinery is a significant decision for any business. The company’s emphasis is therefore on building equipment that delivers long-term value, not just through performance in the paddock but through durability, serviceability and reliability over many seasons of use.
